Barbara Lillian Heier

Barbara Heier, 89, passed away on June 13, 2025 after an illness at the Hospice of Sacred Heart.  

She was born on October 7, 1935 in Scranton, PA, to Howard and Dolores Bush. Barbara was a 1953 graduate and valedictorian of Scranton Technical High School and went on to study at the University of Scranton. 

She started her career upon high school graduation at the Bell Telephone Company, which became Verizon. Barbara held various positions and retired as a customer service representative. Barbara married the love of her life, Robert Heier, who passed away in 1965. She was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, Scranton. Barbara enjoyed volunteering with the Lackawanna County Library for their "Fill a Bag" fundraisers and with the Verizon New Vision Pioneers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crafting, sewing, gardening, cooking, and baking. Barbara discovered her love for painting while living at Clarks Summit Senior living.

Barbara is survived by her children Carole Heier-Rainey, Susan Famularo and her husband Frank, Alison Pesarcik and her husband Gary. Barbara was also the proud grandmother of Brianna Schleicher and her husband Beau, Nora Flok and her husband Keith, and Casey, Jameson, and Mason Rainey.

In addition to her husband and parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her son-in-law James P. Rainey.

The family would like to thank the staff at CMC for their kindness and care, Hospice of the Sacred heart for their support through this journey, and the staff and residents of Clarks Summit Senior Living for making Barbara feel welcome and encouraging her to be part of their community.

Funeral Services will be Friday, June 20 at 11am in the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton, PA 18510.

Visitation is from 9 to 11 am with a brief service at the funeral home following.

Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
