Obituary

Barbara Connor Quinn, a resident of Scranton, Pa., passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23 at her Marywood Heights adopted home shortly after happily celebrating her 90th birthday. She was the widow of Joseph E. Quinn who passed away on May 23, 2014. At the time of his passing the inseparable couple had shared 57 beautiful, love-filled years of marriage.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Hugh J. and Mary Hetherson Connor and was a graduate of South Catholic High School. Barbara was, above all, a caring wife and mother who tirelessly devoted many years of her life to nurturing and providing for her eight children. In addition to meeting the demands associate with raising a large family, in the early years of their marriage Barbara moonlighted in the evenings with husband Joe managing their real estate business. Subsequently she enjoyed a long professional career at the University of Scranton, serving as Assistant to five separate academic deans; in that role her contributions were recognized by induction into the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit honor society. In later years, Barbara served on the staff of the Holy Family Residence in Scranton.

As a devout Catholic, Barbara’s faith was not just spoken but demonstrated daily through her grace and limitless generosity. She was an active member of St. Paul/St. Clare Parish and her former parish, Nativity of Our Lord, Scranton, regularly attending daily Mass. She cherished every moment with her devoted family, living by the motto “joys multiplied, sorrows divided”. She loved books, travel, crocheting, reading, celebrating her Irish heritage, and was an enthusiastic and lifelong New York Yankees fan.

Barbara is survived by her large and loving family, Colleen Quinn Gilboy and husband, Michael; Joseph Quinn and wife, Terri; Kathleen Quinn Nazar; Kelly Quinn Besack and husband, Atty. Steven; Atty. Kevin Quinn and wife, Atty. Laurie Quinn; Patrick T. Quinn; Brendan Quinn and fiancé, Tammi; Bridget Quinn Walsh and husband, Rob; twenty-five grandchildren and twenty- six great-grandchildren. She shared special bonds with many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends whose presence in her life brought her boundless joy. Barbara’s infectious personality, quick wit and unwavering faith will be greatly missed but forever remembered.

She was also preceded in death by her beloved angel daughter, Molly Quinn; grandson Corey Besack; brother Barry C. Connor; sister Judie Harding.

The Quinn family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Marywood Heights and Hospice of the Sacred Heart who cared for Barbara with such kindness, compassion, and dignity in her later years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday August 29, 2026 in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave. Scranton Pa by Barbara's cousin, Rev. Charles P. Connor, STL, Ph.D.

For those unable to attend the Mass, it will be livestreamed on the Vanston and James Funeral Home Facebook page.

Friends may call Friday August 28, 2026 from 4-7 pm in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of the Sacred Heart or St. Joseph’s Center, both of Scranton, PA.
