Christopher Joseph Kelly

The world became a bit of a sadder place earlier this year with the passing of Chirstopher Joseph Kelly of Arlington, VA.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Paul W. and Lucille Gianzanti Kelly, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School (Class of ’77) and received a bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s degree in art history from Marywood College. Chris taught elementary school, middle and school levels for almost 40 years in Texas, Pennsylvania, and for the last 25 years of his career, Virginia. Chirs was beloved by his students for his encyclopedic knowledge of art history, his natural talents as an artist and his innovative approach to teaching. Chris truly touched the hearts and opened the minds of his students.

In addition to being a teacher, Chris also was an artist in his own right. Chris was a talented guitar player and singer who played in bands and as a solo act throughout Northeast Pennsylvania in the late 70’s and early 80’s. His solo repertoire included spot-on covers of Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and many others, as well as his original songs. Chris was a gifted painter, poet and writer. He was well read and could effortlessly quote from Shakespeare or Dante of John Lennon or Jim Morrison (often in the same conversation) and make all of those relatable to whatever was being discussed.

Most importantly, however, Chris was a true friend to all who knew him. He lived a life of kindness to others. Chris leaves behind a host of people who considered him to be a family member and who are heartbroken that he is gone. Among that host of people is his lifelong friend Paul A. Kelly, Jr., who was always there for Chris at every turn.

Chris is survived by his brothers Paul and Ryan.

Inurnment took place in Dunmore Cemetery.

Chris’s friends are planning a memorial service for April 2026.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vanston & James James Funeral Home, Scranton.
