David R. Evarts, Jr., Lake Ariel, died Wednesday morning at home surrounded by his family. His wife of 56 years is the former Thelma Kellogg.
Born 1947 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late David R. and Laura E. Seeley Evarts and was a graduate of the former Waymart High School. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a truck driver.
David served bravely and honorably in battle in the United States Army 1 st Battalion, 21 st Infantry, 2 nd Brigade during the Vietnam War. He was awarded The Purple Heart for wounds he received during battle on January 17, 1972. He was also awarded the Army Commendation and Vietnam Service Medals. On May 26, 1982, David was recognized for his exceptionally meritorious achievement, bravery and service during his service.
Also surviving are sons David R. Evarts, III and Eugene A. Evarts; daughter Katrina Wehrmann and husband John all of Lake Ariel; sisters Maryann Amorine and husband Ron and Kathy Faller and husband William all of South Canaan; brother Mike Evarts and wife Mary of Honesdale; grandchildren Douglas, Shannon, Jamie, Kallie, Julia and Mackenzie; great grandchildren Gabriel and Sarah; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; sister in law Nancy Evarts of Hollisterville; members of the Kellogg family including brothers in law Carl and David Kellogg and sister in law Frances Stevens and husband Glenn.
He was also preceded in death by a sister Laura M. Evarts, RN, BSN; brother John Evarts; brothers in law Chester, Nathaniel, Raymond and Frank Kellogg.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel by Rev. William Henwood.
Friends may call Monday from Noon until the time of the service in the funeral home.
