Donald F. Malone, Sr.

Donald Malone,92, of Beverly Hills, FL,

Don passed away on Monday, January 15 ^th at the age of 92. Don was born to the late Frank and Florence (Dryden) Malone in Mineola, NY on February 1, 1931. He was married to Mona (Sweeney) until her passing on September 16th, 2004.

In 1951 Don enlisted in the Marine Corps, went to Korea and in 1952 returned as a combat Marine, married Mona on August 9 th , 1952 in St. Albans, NY and they began raising a family,

first in St. Albans, College Point and later East Islip, N.Y. Don and his wife, Mona, retired to Beverly Hills in July 1986. He initially resumed a serious hobby, painting scenes of Ireland, landscapes and portraits. It was a talent he developed while a teenager at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn during Saturday morning art classes.

In January 1987, Don became a reader at Our Lady of Grace Church; it was a role he continued for 11 years. In the late 1980s, when computer technology was still in its infancy for home and

office use, Don moved into it and transferred his graphic and artistic skills to the computer and volunteered to help with parish administration. Don subsequently assisted in converting parish data from manual recordkeeping to digital files and reports, became the parish photographer and designed the 2003 parish directory cover to cover. In 2000, the Diocese of St. Petersburg awarded Don the St. Jude Medal for “distinguished and outstanding service” to his parish and community.

In the early 1990s, Don became president of the Parish Pastoral Council and then the Finance Council. Building on pre-retirement skills in advertising presentations at J. Walter Thompson worldwide advertising agency, broad experience in presentations at New York Telephone Company (now Verizon), Don built running accounts and analyses of parish population, Mass attendance and finances and issued monthly, quarterly and year end reports. With one exception, his reporting ended in 2016 when he was 85 (He continued to report to the Finance Council and the parish administration on the weekly parish performance for the Dioceses of St. Petersburg Annual Pastoral Appeal). During this period, Don also served as Treasurer, Membership Chairperson and Club Coordinator for the Citrus County Alpine Life Member Club of the Telephone Pioneers of America from 1987 until the mid-nineties. Don wrote a “Treasurer’s Handbook” that was submitted to AT&T for use by other Life Member Clubs in South Florida. In November 2019, the Knights of Columbus Council 6168 named Don the November 2019 Knight of the Month.

Don is survived by three children: Maureen, Donald Jr. and James; five grandchildren: Michael, Kevin, Lauren, David and Megan; and two great grandchildren: Jack and Owen.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
