Donald Mickel, a lifelong resident of Hamlin, passed away Saturday morning at St. Mary's Villa Nursing Home after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. His loving companion of 30 years was Patricia (Pat) Krisovitch who passed away in 2024.
Born on July 10, 1948, Don was the son of the late Clay and Ethel Hawk Mickel. He was a graduate of the Lake Consolidated School. He was the owner and operator of Don's RV Service & Repair for over 30 years, and previously Mickel Construction. Don was also the longtime caretaker and sexton of the Salem Cemetery in Hamlin, and served the community by driving a school van for Western Wayne School District for many years. Don thoroughly enjoyed conversations with his long-time RV customers, his work at the cemetery, and the many students he drove on the school van. He was a man of faith and was a long-time member of Salem Community Church (previously Centenary United Methodist Church), Hamlin.
Don was a fixture in Hamlin and Lake Ariel where he shared time with his friends and acquaintances at various gathering spots; they would discuss the days events or what was going on in each others' lives. He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor and the great pride he had in his family.
Surviving are his sons Don, Jr. of South Abington Township, Leigh DePew (Becky) of Honesdale, two nephews Peter (Cathy) and Russell (Wanda) Gregory; extended family Tom, Heather, Anthony and Kayla Pruss, Cindy Pruss, Jason Schnell, Alex Featherman, Addyson Pruss, and Levi Schnell, Andy and Regan Pruss, cousins and many friends.
He was also preceded in death by his sister Beverly Gregory and her husband Peter Gregory, Sr.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20th at 6pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4pm until the time of services in the funeral home.
Interment will be private in the Salem Cemetery.
