James "Jim" E. Canterbury, 80, of Jefferson Township, passed away Thursday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center, surrounded by his family. His wife of 50 years is the former Dolores "Dolly" Parker.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Claude and Beatrice Kline - Canterbury. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School Class of 1963. He earned a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University and master's degree from Kean College. Prior to retirement, Jim was a 6th and 7th grade teacher in the Scotch Plains - Fanwood School District, NJ. He was a member of Jackson Street Baptist Church.
Jim was an avid woodworker - from cutting down the trees to the finished product. He was involved in the community in countless ways; always selflessly helping others. He treasured his time with family whether hiking in the mountains, teaching about nature or celebrating 'Canterbury Christmas'. Jim was also the caretaker of Kizer Cemetery in Cortez.
Also surviving are his daughter Cindy Canterbury and her husband John Radzikowski of Jefferson Township; son Jamey Canterbury and his wife Jessica of Hillsborough, NJ; a niece Rebecca Brown and her husband Greg of Shermans Dale, PA; sisters Mary Beth Letwinsky and her husband Bill of Scranton and Martha Jane Bilardi of Sun City West, AZ, brother-in-law Dennis Parker and wife Christene and several nieces and nephews. He was especially proud of his grandsons Ethan and Noah.
Services will be held on Sunday, September 7th at 4:00PM at Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson St, Scranton, PA, by Rev. Dr. Elliott Cooke, Pastor. Visitation will be from 2 PM to 4 PM.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Kizer Cemetery, Cortez. Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the direction of James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel.
