James J. Mellon

James J. Mellon, of Lake Ariel, passed away Saturday evening, the 28th of August, at Geisinger Hospital in Wilkes–Barre. His loving wife of 54 years is Helene Lompa-Mellon.  He was a loving husband and devoted father. He was a faithful Catholic and loved God.

James, also known to many as Jim, was born March 19, 1939 in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.  He was the son of the late James E. Mellon and Mary Woods Mellon (McDonald). He graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania before moving on to study at Villanova University. Jim also attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary for 4 years. After attending the Seminary, Jim was an educator in Philadelphia and Chester. After relocating to Lake Ariel, Jim spent 28 years as a Guidance Counselor and the Head of the Special Education Department for the Wallenpaupack Area School District. He was a member of the St. Thomas More/ St. Mary’s Parish Community.

If Jim were here now he would say “everything is good”.  He always saw the bright side of things.  Jim loved people and he loved life.  He would stop to talk to people anywhere and everywhere.  He loved to hear people’s stories and he truly cared about people.  Jim also loved kids which is why he became an educator.  He even fostered several children with his wife, Helene.  Jim valued honesty and trust.  He strongly believed in the importance of education and he himself never stopped learning.  He was a simple man.  He found happiness in his countryside drives with his wife, watching Villanova basketball, the Philadelphia Eagles play, York peppermint patties, Fox news, old random movies, and eating Italian dinners with friends.  In his spare time he was learning German, playing sudoku, reading the paper, and relaxing with a glass of beer.  Jim left us all with a huge hole in our hearts and though it will never fully mend just knowing that he is in peace with God and we will see him again helps the loss we feel.

Jim is survived by his three children; James Mellon (spouse Trish), Suzy Mellon-Pulido (spouse Dimitrius), and Michael Mellon (spouse Emily), and four grandchildren; Andrew, Katie, Ethan, and Francine.  He is also survived by his older sister, Marianne Brady, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate Jim’s life in their own way, although raising a glass of beer or wine in his memory would be quite appropriate.

Due to the pandemic, the family respectfully requests that anyone attending the viewing or funeral wear a mask.

Anyone attending the funeral is asked to go directly to the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10am in St. Thomas More Church, 105 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel by Rev. Stephen Stavoy, Pastor.

Friends may come Thursday from 4 – 6PM at the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.

Interment, Gethsemane Cemetery, Easton.
