Lucille
Johnston
Nov 12, 1925 — Oct 6, 2026
West Scranton, PA.
Lucille Johnston, 100, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at the Green Ridge Care Center. She was the wife of Walter Johnston for 40 years until his passing on December 18, 1987.
Born at home on November 12, 1925, she was the daughter of Edward and Jessie Hill Peters of Scranton. She resided in West Scranton for most of her life before moving to South Abington Township in 2003.
Lucille was a member of the first senior class to graduate from West Scranton Senior High School in 1943. In later years, she served on the class reunion committee. She was active in the PTA and served as president of the Charles Sumner PTA.
A third-generation member of Simpson West Park United Methodist Church until its closing in 2003, Lucille served on the Administrative Board, as a trustee, and on the PPRC. She also served as a Girl Scout leader. Following the church's closing, she became a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church.
In earlier years, Lucille worked in the office of Meals on Wheels. She later spent 18 years as coordinator of the Friendly Visitor/Telecare program at Telespond Senior Services, retiring at age 83.
She was an active life member of the CMC Auxiliary and volunteered at CMC-GCMC for 28 years. In recognition of her service, she received a Presidential Award and a letter signed by President Barack Obama. After several falls at home, she gave up volunteering at age 92.
Walter and Lucille enjoyed camping. Following his retirement, they maintained a seasonal site at the KOA in Tunkhannock. After Walter's death, Lucille continued camping there for several seasons, with the Battenburg family "always there" for her.
Lucille enjoyed sewing and making her own clothing, crocheting afghans for family and friends, latch hooking, reading, and playing pinochle. In later years, she enjoyed visiting the Abington Community Library for mystery books and doing crossword puzzles.
She looked forward to her weekly lunches out with her niece Jackie. She especially enjoyed playing Scrabble when her grandson Chris and his family visited from Connecticut, followed by trips to Manning's Farm for ice cream.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Medford, of Danbury, Connecticut; her son, James Johnston, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Jeanne Shields, of Carmel, New York, Lois Phillips, of Scranton, and Ann Richardson of S. Abington Twp.
No calling hours or service are planned at this time.
Arrangements are through Vanston and James Funeral Home, Scranton.
