Mary Alberta Hailstone died at home Tuesday October 6, 2026 under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart and her husband of 60 years, Andrew Hailstone. She was 85 years old.

Mary was raised in Minooka by sisters Mary and Alyce Diskin. She is a 1959 graduate of the Central High School and graduated from Marywood in 1963. Mary began teaching first grade in the Scranton School District at Charles Sumner School as Miss Diskin and then as Mrs. Hailstone. Later she moved to Robert Morris School and retired in 1993. While teaching, she earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Scranton in 1966.

She is survived by her children, each of whom was her favorite. Alyce Hailstone Farrell and her husband Rob and their children Virginia Noto and her husband Michael, Charles Farrell, and Eleanor Farrell; Andrew “Jaime” Hailstone and his wife Jenn, and Jaime’s sons Liam Hailstone and Seamus Hailstone; Sara Hailstone and her partner Sean Boyle; and Daniel Hailstone and his wife Sandra.

Mary devoted herself to her family, her church, her home and her garden of white flowers, but especially to her husband to whom she gave her whole heart for her whole life.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 10 at Immaculate Conception of Mary Church, 800 Taylor Avenue, Scranton. 

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that you consider a contribution to Hospice of the Sacred Heart so others may die with dignity or to United Neighborhood Centers so others may live with dignity.
