Michael “George” Edward Opalka, 65, Waymart, PA passed away Tuesday at his home he built for his family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Cynthia “Cindy” Opalka.
He graduated from Carbondale Area High School, where he attended Vocational Technical School. He was a strong proponent of the trades. He loved tinkering around the house to the very end. He bursted with pride when his daughters asked for help around their houses.
Mike worked his entire career at Shop Rite, 43.642 years. When he wasn’t working, he loved golfing, going on adventures, and watching Yankees baseball with his family. Michael and Cindy’s dog was even named Yankee Puggerly.
Michael enjoyed shopping for sales and sharing his treasures with others. Working at a grocery store, typically odd snacks were his favorite treasures. Whether it was St Rose’s community kitchen or bringing an abundance of treats when visiting, you never left with an empty stomach or without a smile on your face.
His family is incredibly grateful to the firefighters and EMS services from Waymart, Cottage Hose, Prompton, and Honesdale. May they continue to keep his memory alive when reminiscing about their heroic responses.
He was the loving son of the late John and Eleanor Opalka. Surviving are daughters: Dr. Michele Oleksak(Dr. William), Dr. Melanie Opalka-Bentler(Robert), Marissa Smith(Nicholas), his one and only granddaughter Mariah Bentler (his pride and joy), many siblings, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 2nd at 9:30 in St. Rose Church 6 N Church St, Carbondale, PA 18407.
Interment, St. Michael’s Cemetery, Simpson.
Michael had a special place in his heart for people with disabilities. While working at the Port Jervis Shop Rite, his coworker-Peter made a lasting impact. For that, in lieu of flowers, we strongly encourage memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Joseph’s Center 2010 Adams Avenue Scranton Pa 18509.
