Ramon “Ray” Queipo

Ramon Michael Queipo, 82, a lifelong resident of Lake Ariel, passed away February 29th in South Carolina following an illness.

Born June 30, 1941, in Olyphant, he was the son of the late Antonio and Anna Queipo.

Ray is preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, B.Ray and Goldie Minich.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda (Minich) Queipo and their children Brett (Jackie), Brenda (Joe), and Sarah Toigo (Jason), a granddaughter, Nicole Crissey and her children Andrew and Ryleigh.  He is also survived by his sister, Theodora Bryant-Mullen and her husband Jim, sisters-in-law, Norma Massood and Ruth Minich, cousins, a niece, nephews, and their families.

Ray was a graduate of Lake Consolidated High School where he was known for being an excellent athlete.  To this day, people reminisce about a basketball all-star game played at the Honesdale Armory where he made a slam dunk and brought the whole hoop down. His 1,193-point career placed him among the top ten scorers for a 25-year period from 1947-1972.  He was later inducted into the Wayne Area Sports Hall of Fame.  He continued athletics as a lifetime member of the Honesdale Golf Club and enjoyed participating in softball and bowling leagues.

Following high school, he enlisted in the Army where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division.  After his honorable discharge from the Army he went on to be employed by Conrail where he worked as a communications technician.

He continued to participate in community projects as a former member of the Hamlin Masonic Lodge # 218 F&AM and the Irem Shrine in Dallas, Pennsylvania where he helped to found the Wayne/Pike Shrine Bowl.   He was also a member of the Hamlin American Legion Post 807. Ray enjoyed politics and was turned to often for his guidance and endorsement by various politicians in the Republican party.

During his retirement years, he loved to travel with his wife, Linda to their second home in South Carolina.  However, he enjoyed getting back to his roots in Lake Ariel each spring to ride his tractor and keep his lawn in pristine condition.

He also enjoyed meeting lifelong friends for breakfast each day to share stories of the good old days.  Ray will be forever remembered by his friends and family for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and ability to make others laugh.
