Obituary

Sylvia M. Reap, of the Weston Field section of North Scranton, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Marywood Heights after an extended illness. She and her late husband, Edward, were married for sixty-four years. He died on November 6, 2015.

Sylvia, the daughter of the late Jose Joaquim and Eliza Fontes Rodrigues, was born in Scranton on February 26, 1930. Educated in the city’s public schools, she spoke fondly of her years at Bancroft Elementary, North Scranton Junior High and Scranton Technical High School, from which she graduated in 1948.

She began her working career as a quiller operator in a local textile mill before her marriage and the subsequent births of her children. She was later employed as a waitress at Abe's Delicatessen, a position she held for thirty-plus years. She then enjoyed a lengthy tenure at the Green Ridge Club before officially retiring at age eighty-two.

Sylvia cultivated several lifelong interests. She truly had a 'green thumb' and she was proud of her lovely garden. The array of colors and variety of flowers in her yard were a testament to her talent. Sylvia also found much pleasure in cooking and crocheting. She and Ed were ardent Penn State football fans, and they enjoyed their many trips to State College.

She was proud of her Portuguese heritage and her ability to speak the language. Sylvia was also proud of her Scranton roots. But she was proudest of the academic and professional accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

Raised in the Roman Catholic faith, Sylvia was a long-time member of St. Vincent de Paul parish in North Scranton. She had special affection for St. Peter’s Cathedral and often attended services with her son.

Sylvia's family will be forever grateful for the compassionate and professional care their mother and grandmother received from the exceptional staffs at Marywood Heights and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

Surviving: a daughter, Deborah M. Santini (Frank), Archbald; a son, Brian J. Reap (Lynne), Scranton; grandsons, Christopher Santini, Washington, D.C.; Kyle Reap, (Libby Marquardt Reap), Wayne, PA; granddaughter, Cara Reap Raymond (Charles), Plymouth Meeting, PA; great-grandchildren: Charlie and Jake Raymond; Brooks and Beau Reap; sisters-in-law, Irene Rodrigues (Delmont), Mechanicsburg, PA and Dorothy Rodrigues (Anthony), Newton, NJ; and nieces and nephews.
