Born in Paterson, NJ he was the son of the late William J. and Lena DeGroot, Sr. He earned a B.A. from Montclair St. and had worked as a art teacher.

Surviving are a son William J. III of Arizona, David of Sparta, NJ, and Adam of Lake Ariel; 3 grandchildren.

Cremation took place in the Lake Region Crematory at the James Wilson Funeral Home.
